Project Description

The Square

For 25 days, between May and June 2011, the 15M movement literally took the Puerta del Sol of Madrid. After a peaceful demonstration, a handful of protesters who were protesting against the current socio-political situation decided to stay on. In just two weeks, tens of thousands joined them forming a small medina at the heart of the spanish capital. This is the story of how that city was formed, how it was organized, how decisions were made. How, in a few days, it became the intellectual and physical core of protests that spread all over the world. No opinions, no external analysis, just facts. This documentary is a fundamental piece to understand where the 15M movement comes from and where does it go, by capturing the most successful moments of the camping and also those of its decline: the endless assemblies, the dangerous nights where the campers faced the violence of the Madrid street, clashes with the police… 35 hours of recording, 25 days of intensive work with interviews and exclusive images to try to unravel what happened and how it was possible for a city to engender another city, unique, ephemeral and probably unrepeatable.
